- — A THROWBACK TO OUR MALDIVES HONEYMOON —
By seaplane we flew over the beautiful azure coloured dots that were lying in the ocean beneath us. When the plane dropped us off at our island we couldn’t believe our eyes. Pearly white sand, crystal clear water, a lush tropical vegetation and a million colourful fish swimming in the water. I have never seen anything like it. It was truly magnificent.

We were escorted to our Jacuzzi Water Villa, located on the West side of the Island (which offered us amazing sunsets). A bit rude maybe, but when we entered our villa we immediately lost total interest in the staff’s welcome speech. The 180°C view at the Indian Ocean was spectacular! The water was unbelievably clear and inviting and an enormous eagle ray was swimming beneath our deck… I ripped my bikini out of my suitcase and jumped into the water :).
After our first swim we decided to explore the island. Not that there was a lot to explore (in 15 minutes you have completed your walk around the island) but surprisingly there was a lot more to do than we first thought. The resort had an amazing luxurious Spa run by experienced Balinese Women (they are the best!), so we booked a package of five treatments. Expensive, but definitely worth the money :). It was by far one of the best Spa’s I have ever visited. The XL design bathtub offered us a full ocean view. A soft breeze caressed our faces while we soaked off our coconut scrub and enjoyed fresh fruit and champagne… You get the picture ;).
And the food…oh my god…the food. Freshly imported every day and an enormous variety. The craziest food combinations landed on my plate during breakfast because I simply wanted to taste it all and I didn’t know where to start. Pieces of fresh coconut with mango sauce and waffles covered in chocolate syrup were my favourite. It wasn’t a big surprise that I gained a couple of pounds during our stay ;).
Throughout our whole stay we surprisingly felt like we were the only guests on the island. We only saw other guests during breakfast, lunch or dinner. Before and after those moments everyone seemed to magically disappear. Quite remarkable for such a tiny island.
Beforehand I was a bit worried that we would get bored on such a small island with nothing but sun, sea, sand and fish, but luckily I was wrong. In fact, I wish I had taken it a bit more easy! Time flies when you’re snorkeling, diving, windsurfing, enjoying massages and tasting all kinds of food.
The Maldives has the best diving and snorkeling spots in the whole world, so were were glad we brought an underwater camera. The steep walls in the ocean were absolutely stunning and we’ve seen a million different fishes in the craziest colours. On the island we bought a book with all fish species in it. It was fun to mark all the fishes that we spotted after each snorkeling and diving session.
And while I’m writing this down I’m reliving the idyllic Maldives all over again. I hope to go there for a second time when our daughter is a bit older. By the way, did you know that the Maldives are threatened by the rising sea level? All the more reason to go there and experience true paradise before it no longer exists!
